In September and October of 2011, the “Filmfestblog“ was the first of three major, four-week undergraduate projects I participated in. The 25 students in our class first worked for two weeks to prepare for the following 11 days of content production at the Hamburg Film Festival. During those 11 days, we produced two video packages per day, which we then uploaded and shared on social media platforms such as YouTube and Facebook.
I was the managing editor, overseeing the content production process and afterward presenting the results to the project’s executive producers for publication. I led a team of five peers who were assigned with the production of a review of one of the movies shown at the film festival that very day. The following four packages are samples of the content we created on a day-to-day basis, with an exclusive interview of actresses Emma Stone, Olivia Spencer and Viola Davis as well as producer Tate Taylor as the highlight. Please find English translations under the respective video window.
One of the themes at the 2011 Hamburg Film Festival was the intersection of film and music. We used that to visit a local record store, where we talked to the owner Andre Frahn. He helped us review the three movies integrated into the music section.
The documentary “Page One: Inside The New York Times” examines the digitalization of journalism. Our team visited the newsroom of the regional daily newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt, where we talked to Oliver Schirg, head of the online department and my boss at the time, and used his expertise to review the movie.
The highlight of the 2011 Hamburg Film Festival was the German premiere of the U.S. blockbuster “The Help,” starring Hollywood stars Emma Stone, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis. This package was unusual in a sense that we joined forces with another group of students, which was assigned to do daily red carpet interviews. By Including interviews with producer Tate Taylor and the three protagonists, we produced a more appealing review of this particular movie.
On the very last day of the film festival, we managed to get an exclusive interview with the three protagonists and the producer of the American box-office hit “The Help,” which we used to produce this final package.
